South African Leopard Tortoise

$350.00

The South African variety of leopard tortoise is the largest of the leopard tortoises available in the United States, reaching length of two feet on average for adults and up to sixty pounds. Although large, this species is not destructive and won’t dig burrows, but do require a heated night house. The South African leopards are well known for their highly speckled skin, rough armored legs, and multi-spotted carapace scutes which give them the namesake of “leopard” tortoise. As the hatchlings grow they will go through an ever changing array of gold and black shell patterns. Moderately tempered they do well alone or in groups of three or more when provided enough space. They have friendly personalities and associate their care takers with food quickly allowing for a strong bond.

This tortoise was produced our female Edna who is a pure Price line South African leopard tortoise and is housed with a pure Price line male, hatched 4-27-24, currently weighing 103g, is just over 3” along the plastron, and was incubated for female.

*Please note incubation for temperature sex determination does not guarantee the sex.
